Full Coverage vs Liability in Florida: What's Better?

It's the question we hear most often from Naples drivers: 'Do I need full coverage or is liability enough?' There's no universal right answer — but there's a clear framework for deciding. Here it is.
What 'liability only' actually means in Florida
In Florida, 'liability only' typically means $10k PIP + $10k Property Damage Liability (the legal minimum). Add Bodily Injury Liability ($100k/$300k recommended) and you have full liability coverage. None of this pays to repair YOUR car if you cause an accident, hit a tree, or have your car stolen.
What 'full coverage' includes
Full coverage adds Collision (pays for your car after a crash regardless of fault) and Comprehensive (covers theft, vandalism, hail, flood, fallen trees, animal strikes). In Florida, comprehensive is especially valuable due to hurricane and flood risk. Full coverage also typically includes uninsured motorist protection.
The simple rule: car value vs. premium difference
Take the annual cost of adding full coverage and multiply by 10. If that number is more than your car's current value, full coverage probably doesn't make financial sense. Example: if full coverage adds $1,200/year and your car is worth $8,000, you'd pay $12,000 over 10 years to insure an $8,000 car. Drop it.
When you MUST carry full coverage
If you have a loan or lease on the vehicle, the lender requires full coverage — no exceptions. They'll force-place expensive coverage if you let yours lapse, and you'll be on the hook for it.
When liability-only makes sense
Older vehicles (10+ years old) worth under $4,000, paid off, with no plans to replace immediately. You should also have enough savings to replace the car out of pocket if it's totaled. In Naples specifically, even on older vehicles, we often recommend keeping comprehensive for hurricane/flood protection — it's usually only $150–$300/year.
When full coverage is worth every penny
Newer vehicles (under 5 years old), financed or leased vehicles, expensive vehicles, or any car you couldn't easily replace from savings. Florida's high uninsured-driver rate also makes full coverage more valuable here than in most states.
